As part of its centennial celebration, the Insurance Brokers Association of BC (IBACB) hosted its inaugural Awards Gala on May 31st at BC Place stadium. After a nomination process covering seven different categories, the newly minted IBACB Centennial Awards were presented to seven individuals whose decades-long hard work and dedication has had a lasting effect in our industry and in communities around British Columbia and beyond.

We are very pleased to announce that Reliance Insurance president and IBABC Award nominee, Jim Ball became the first recipient of the Community Champion of the Year Award. A self-described empathetic person, Jim is always thinking about the welfare of others. He’s held local board positions at the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of Vancouver, Immigrant Services Society of BC and the BCIT Insurance & Risk Management Diploma Committee among others.

“When I see that there is something that needs to be done for somebody, and I’m capable of doing it, then I do it” – Jim Ball

Jim’s passion for social giving led him south to several impoverished areas of Nicaragua, prompting him to become a founding member of Bridges to Community Canada, where he, along with other volunteers have raised over $2 million, built 220 houses, two schools and a library.

Congratulations to Jim Ball and the other IBABC Award recipients for your amazing contributions both inside and outside of the insurance industry. A hearty congratulations are also in order for the IBABC on reaching the impressive centennial milestone in business. Many thanks to the IBABC Award sponsors including Aviva Canada; Gore Mutual; Intact Insurance and Wawanesa Insurance and the IBABC Centennial Gala Evening sponsorship.

“He does have a very strong social conscience. In terms of what he believes; ultimately we are here to do, in addition, to provide for ourselves, but also to help make the world a little bit better, even if it’s just incrementally” – Chris Ball, Jim’s son and CEO, Reliance Insurance
